Allopurinol is a drug used to relieve the symptoms of gout, such as tophi (uric acid crystals collecting in the tissues), joint destruction, and uric acid stones. Allopurinol reduces the amount of uric acid produced in your body and prevents the formation of crystals. However, this medicine does not have immediate effects and will not stop an attack of gout once it started. Take the exact dose prescribed by your doctor. In most cases the patients are first prescribed the lowest dosage that is later gradually increased to reach the most efficient and beneficial dose. Your doctor will recommend drinking plenty of fluids – about 10 to 12 glasses a day. An attack of gout may be prevented if you follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding the diet. Beer, wine and purine-rich foods are known to contribute to such attacks. Avoid combining allopurinol with other drugs without consulting your health care provider. Some medicines can increase, decrease or alter the effects of allopurinol therefore affecting the efficiency of your treatment. Do not take two doses of allopurinol. If you missed a dose and it’s almost time for the next one just skip the missed dose and continue taking this medicine as before. Do not get engaged in hazardous activities as allopurinol can cause drowsiness.
